That’s a very businesslike way of describing a virtual assistant business. Here is what I really think virtual assistants are from my own personal point of view. In short, a Virtual Assistant is someone who gives assistance online. I think that there are a lot of people out there who are virtual assistants and don’t realise that they’re virtual assistants yet. You might be a writer for a travel magazine, a freelance journalist of some kind, or somebody who writes for a number of different papers or magazines. If you are technically assisting these outlets with the creation of the content, you could be classified as a virtual assistant. Now, I’m not saying that you are a virtual assistant but at some form of virtual assistance. You might be writing on a freelance basis. You could be helping somebody with their social media efforts. If you provide the services online and you provide those services over the internet then I believe you are providing virtual assistance.

That is open to interpretation as I am expressing my opinion and I’m talking to anybody who is considering coming into the Virtual Assistant Program that I am putting together, together with the VA Apprentice. You don’t have to be somebody doing administration or secretarial work and you don’t have to come from that kind background at all. Your background, in this case, is irrelevant. What we really need to focus on is what you actually do, what your aspirations are and what skills you have, together with the right amount of passion for these important things that feature in your life and how you can convert them into an online business, effectively. So we can boil it down to this: I aim to look at all the skills you have, to take into account your experience, look at what business you have right now and then convert everything into a virtual business, so we can launch it on the Internet.

You might look at it as a colleague to colleague relationship. We can call it anything like that. But if you are providing something for somebody else, then you are assisting. If you’re doing it online, it’s virtual, virtual assistance. That’s what it is to me anyway because basically my business is made up of a variety of different things. I do administration, all the general secretarial tasks that you find that traditional virtual assistants do but I also do web design and development, content management systems, word press, social media marketing, writing, you name it it’s on there. I make sure that I focus my interests on anything to do with building a presence online and building a web business and advise you to do the same. All of these areas and functions need to be mastered by you, if you are going to have a very successful and workable online business.

So, that’s what I decided that I wanted to do but you may be different. You might want to restrict yourself to just bookkeeping. Okay, but you can also be a virtual assistant because you can take your bookkeeping business online. I can enlighten, don’t worry.

So, that’s basically what I think virtual assistance is and even if I was to get rid of a lot of my services and I was to say, “Right, you know, I’m going to scrap the admin. I don’t want to be involved with social media marketing and these other things and just concentrate on web development.” If I’m providing this online and I’m assisting other people with their websites, I’m still a Virtual Assistant. I’m not going to change my name because I’ve just decided to focus on web development.

That’s my opinion of what a Virtual Assistant actually is. It’s anybody who provides assistance to anyone else online from a remote location.

2. Shaky video. One word: Tripod! There are fabulous, low-cost tripods out there, from simple table-top options, to crazy bendy-legged ones, to ones that will stick on the side of a wall or building. Tripods are not as expensive as you might think, either. There is no longer an excuse for giving your viewers seasickness!

3. You look like a robot. If your finished version looks unnatural, there is only one thing you can do — practice more. Go back and read the section “Practice Makes Perfect,” as there are some great tips in there. As you practice your comfort level will rise, but don’t get to the point where it looks entirely rehearsed and unnatural.

4. You are boring. Technically, you seem to be doing everything right – but you’re so boring, even your dog falls asleep! If this is your issue, you are not conveying your enthusiasm for your topic. Even double entry bookkeeping can be interesting if you communicate your excitement. Don’t try and be overly effervescent if you are not naturally so, but do accentuate your personality just a little bit! (Note: If you’re not passionate about the subject matter, take another look at your business niche. Are you sure you have chosen the right subject area?)

5. The information isn’t compelling. Very few of us have that type of personality that we are able to make even the most mundane content material seem exhilarating. But nevertheless, we still need to be engaged with the content. If what you’re presenting isn’t of interest to your audience, you’re going to lose them. Check over your keyword research and find out what people are actively looking for in your niche and remember to focus on those areas.
