I think that the best technique is not to have one, actually. But I do have a tip for you which I use when I am looking to do a new client intake, of which I am going to do a live demonstration for you, so you can see it in action, in the video that goes with this post.

Fundamentally, understand that nobody of any value to your business will give you any consideration or be inclined to interact, unless they know that it’s YOU. I try to stick to a general rule of thumb doing several “Real” tweets, for example answering the question “What’s Happening,” or re-tweeting something from a follower, or re-tweeting a good blog post. At other times, I put some specific business tweets in and send some of my links out there. I try and keep these in perspective however and I never run the risk of boring people with too many business tweets. I find that (1 in 10 – 15) is about the right number.

I wanted to actually show you how being real can really work, so while I’m sitting here writing this now, I am going to go on Twitter and answer the question, “What’s Happening?” This will be my Tweet:

“I’m composing an article about Twitter and I need you to do something for me — if you see this can you send me a tweet back? I will love you forever if you do!! Thanks!”

After all, that’s exactly “what’s happening” at this moment. However, as far as your own VA business is concerned, you could say…

1. “My VA practice is taking on new clients, is anybody aware of somebody who might need some help?”

2. “I’m sure there is somebody out there who could use an hour of complimentary administrative services?”

3. “Help me with my article about using a VA for bookkeeping and tell me what you use them for?”

You get the idea, I have done this many times, and I have had quite a few really great leads.

After 20 minutes I want to see what kind of response I’ve had and how many real @reply responses my experiment has generated and even though 20 minutes is not long, remember that Twitter runs at a hectic pace so that is an ideal amount of time for this kind of tweet; you can see from the real life example in the video that I got about 16 altogether and if this is not very clear in the YouTube example, I will generate a screen capture shot to help you see it. I have also tweeted and said thank you to all of these people during this time, so my original tweet is very lost at the back now, so I would advise that you wait a little while and leave your tweet up, before tweeting your “Thank You’s.” I placed all these people on a specific Twitter list because they were so fabulous for interacting and they are now on my “Awesome Twitter Experiment” list! Another day passes and the client is asking questions, wanting to know how the project is going and asking for a few changes to the original project. You still can’t reach Lisa, so you start working on the project yourself. If you work straight through the next day and night, you might be able to meet the deadline. And then Lisa emails. The moral of this story: Always establish a trial period to get to know how your subcontractor works, before you allocate them a very important project. Had you done this with Lisa, you would have found out that she might not be so good at communicating during the project, even though she completes her work well, on time and with good cheer. This whole situation may make you think twice about Lisa, as you are not sure whether you can deal with the fact that she is poor at communication, despite being good at her work and might think twice about extending your relationship with her due to the amount of stress that will undoubtedly arise as a consequence of this poor communication.

While certain problems may well arise during the trial period, you will be able to handle these as they emerge and can avoid any bigger issues in the future. You’ll also want to be sure and give your subcontractor constructive feedback after the trial period is over. It’s likely that Lisa has worked with your associates or colleagues for a long time and has never given cause for concern before. Now, for a business that is online, here’s what you would likely spend for: a domain name (roughly $5 a month, more or less), someone to build your website, someone to market your website and a “click to buy” service. Not much right? But also remember, you can lessen that even further if you really want to save. You can use a free blog service for starters (many small businesses use Multiply or WordPress), you can bypass the website developer then since free blogs usually have a relatively simple template and layout for you to work on, and as for marketing, you can even learn SEO, or search engine optimization, on your own.

Then there’s the “click to buy” service. How can you bypass that service? Well, you can start by being a trustworthy individual and have people wire transfer the money to your account, or you can use paypal (which is a free service). Though the problem with these is that though you are trustworthy, your buyer may not, so stick with paypal. A paid service will work better of course, but there are numerous workarounds. So how much have you spent now with an online business? Basically nothing except your time.

Now, of course starting a business online is more than what is written above. There are other things to consider, and though not all may have workarounds so you can avoid paying more, the overall money you will be spending as capital is very minimal as compared to a brick and mortar store. One other thing that’s great about having a business online is that you get to work when you want to , wherever you are. You may have to invest on a mobile phone with Internet access so you can check incoming orders regularly, but that’s just a small cost considering you can do business while on the beach drinking a pina colada or margarita. It’s either that or you can choose to personally visit your physical store everyday and endure the stresses of the daily commute. Doesn’t paying for a data plan now seem like a good idea?
